Thermal Curtains and Blinds Help Your Health and Your Wallet

Pop on a thermal jumper, coat and boots and head out into a freezing winter’s morning. Add the electric blanket and flannelette sheets to the bed and turn up the heat pump or stoke up the fire now that it’s cold inside. These are all good ideas for keeping warm, however, it could be a waste of time and money if it’s all wrapped up in an uninsulated house!

Having a warm and dry home is a healthier, happier home to live in. It’s more comfortable in winter, saves you on heating costs and can keep illnesses at bay - especially for those of us who are prone to skin and sinus allergies or suffer from a cold or flu each winter.

It’s worth noting just where the majority of heat escapes from your home (all approximate percentages).

How heat escapes your home

As you can see, a lot of your home’s heat escapes through your windows. Thankfully, though, there are a number of ways to seal up your home, get rid of draughts and prevent all that lovely heat from getting away.

Those gaps around the windows all adds to money escaping from your home. Silicone around exterior weatherboards and windows, door seals, door and window weather-strips are cost effective ways to eliminate draughts and noise. And by minimising these gaps it improves the performance of your curtains and blinds as well as keeping in the heat.

Looking for thermal backed curtains?

It would be fair to say we have a few options for you. With over 500 fabrics to choose from it is best to contact us and have an in-home consultation from one of our curtain specialists so you can get a real feel for what colour or pattern suits your home best. It’s something you want to get right the first time like buying the right bed or finding the right sofa - and having the mobile store come directly to your home means accurate measurements, the best advice, the right product for the room – all from an extensive curtain and blind colour range.

Whether your taste is contemporary, classic or a little more adventurous, your local Harrisons curtain consultant can take you through ideas and colour combinations put together by Interior Designer Anita Shirley. Anita has developed a series of ‘mood boards’ which are a tremendous help when you have certain textures and colours in mind - but you’re not sure how to group them together.

Where to start?

The best place to start is to ask what function do you want from your window treatment. What made you think about changing them in the first place? Was the room too cold, too bright or had a lack of privacy? Often the room may need to address a combination of functions and our local specialists are there to help with anything you aren’t sure about.

If blinds are more to your taste, our honeycomb blinds (some call them Cellular Blinds) are superb insulators and come in both light filtering and block out options. The pleated air pockets have a double glazing effect which can dramatically cut heat transfer through the blind, making them an effective barrier against cold windows and draughts.

Thermal coated fabric has a suede coating fused onto the back of the face cloth and are rated as a 1, 2 or 3 pass which refers to the number of suede layers. A 1-pass coat will block up to 60% of light whilst a 3-pass will block out 100%. Tripleweaves provide the same insulation properties as thermal coated fabrics and block up to 98% of the light.

If you are wondering why curtains and roman fabrics contain a high man-made fibre content these days, it is because materials such as polyester increase the durability and lifetime of the curtain. Whereas a 100% natural fabric such as linen does not stand up to extreme conditions and are prone to shrinking in high heat only to drop in the cooler conditions.

Our thermal curtains and blinds are a solid investment because they:

  • Can help keep illnesses and allergies away by keeping your home warmer and drier.
  • Bring you many years of enjoyment. Our Total Satisfaction Guarantee is “If you don’t love it, we’ll replace it”.
  • Add value to your home through warmth and look which can attract potential buyers when you want to sell.

We often have custom-made window specials running so be sure to check them out here!
